Owl-Reach is a crutch-mounted accessory system that transforms mobility aids into a hands-free tool station. The flexible TPU "Owl Clip" utilizes compliant geometry to accommodate various crutch and grabber dimensions, while the "Branch Base" ensures a secure mechanical interface. For smaller diameter crutches, the wing-shaped design allows for an optional elastic tensioner to refine the fit. Owl-Reach keeps essential reaching tools accessible and hands-free during travel, improving efficiency and utility for daily tasks.
Owl-Reach is a crutch-mounted accessory system designed to transform standard mobility aids into a hands-free tool station. This system moves essential reaching tools from the user’s hands to a dedicated mounting point on the crutch, allowing for unimpeded travel.
Instead of requiring the user to manage a grabber tool while operating crutches, I developed a universal interface that accommodates various grabber diameters and works with both rectangular wooden and cylindrical metal crutch frames. The goal was to create a lightweight system that preserves the stability of the mobility aid while adding the utility of hands-free tool transport.
The project is built around a specialized mechanical interface to ensure tools stay exactly where they are placed:
The Friction-Fit System: A flexible TPU clip that utilizes material tension to accommodate various grabber sizes. This ensures the tool remains stable and perfectly aligned during movement.
Universal Interface: A non-destructive clip designed to provide high clamping force without damaging the crutch material. The wing-shaped geometry allows for optional elastic-tensioner reinforcement for smaller diameter frames.
Material Synergy: By utilizing high-performance TPU, the system achieves a secure, "rubbery" grip that remains easy to adjust during operation.
To achieve an optimal balance of flexibility and grip, the system utilizes TPU 95A for both primary components:
The Branch Base: The flexible crutch interface. The compliant geometry allows the base to wrap around various frame sizes and materials. The wing-shaped design serves as a mounting point for additional tensioners if a tighter fit is required.
The Owl Clip: The flexible tool holder. The internal diameter and material friction prevent the grabber from slipping, accommodating different tool brands without the need for individual modifications.
The Wing-Shaped Geometry was the turning point for this project. By engineering specific flex points into the TPU components, I was able to create a mount that remains stable during movement yet accommodates a wide range of hardware. The optional tensioner reinforcement under the wings transforms the fit from "sliding" to "locked" without the need for tools or permanent modifications to the crutch.
Key Lesson: The primary goal was to design a cross-compatible solution for various underarm crutch styles. This established a scalable foundation that can be adapted for forearm-style aids in future iterations.
