Owl-Reach (Walker Edition) is a spin-off of the original Owl-Reach for underarm crutches, adapted for standard and 2-wheel walkers. This flexible TPU clip snaps onto the walker's 23mm frame bar in seconds, transforming it into a hands-free tool station for your grabber. It's foldable-friendly, so most walkers can still fold and store with the clip attached, and it fits a wide range of grabber pole diameters.
Owl-Reach (Walker Edition) is a walker-mounted accessory system, a spin-off of the original Owl-Reach for underarm crutches, designed to transform standard and 2-wheel walkers into a hands-free tool station. This system moves essential reaching tools from the user's hands to a dedicated mounting point on the walker frame, allowing for unimpeded travel.
Instead of requiring the user to manage a grabber tool while operating a walker, I adapted the universal interface concept to fit the walker's cylindrical metal frame, specifically the standard 23mm diameter bar found on most hospital-style and two-wheel walkers. The goal was to create a lightweight system that preserves the stability of the walker while adding the utility of hands-free tool transport, without interfering with folding.
The project is built around a specialized mechanical interface to ensure tools stay exactly where they are placed:
The Snap-Fit System: A flexible TPU clip that snaps onto the walker's frame bar in seconds, using material flex rather than hardware to secure itself in place.
Universal Interface: A non-destructive clip designed to provide secure clamping without damaging the walker frame. For users with different bar diameters, the model can be scaled in-slicer or adjusted using the included STEP file.
Material Synergy: By utilizing high-performance TPU, the system achieves a secure, "rubbery" grip. Adding a strip of rubber adhesive tape to the inside of the clip further increases friction against the metal frame.
To achieve an optimal balance of flexibility and grip, the system utilizes TPU 95A for both primary components:
The Branch Base: The flexible walker interface. The compliant geometry allows the base to snap around the 23mm frame bar securely, while remaining foldable-friendly so most walkers can still fold and store with the clip attached.
The Owl Clip: The flexible tool holder. The internal diameter and material friction prevent the grabber from slipping, accommodating a wide range of grabber pole diameters and tool brands without individual modifications.
Adapting the friction-fit concept to a fixed-diameter walker bar was the turning point for this project. By engineering the clip specifically around the 23mm standard, I was able to create a mount that snaps on in seconds, stays stable during movement, and doesn't interfere with the walker's folding mechanism. For users needing maximum stability, printing and mounting two Owl-Reach clips is also an option.
Key Lesson: The original goal was a cross-compatible solution for underarm crutches. Adapting that foundation to walkers required rethinking the interface from a variable friction-fit to a standardized snap-fit, since walker frames are far more uniform in diameter than crutch shafts.
